PSHE in Year 5
In September 2020 it was made compulsory for all primary age children to be taught Relationships and Health Education. These subjects are designed to equip your child with knowledge to make informed decisions about their well-being, health and relationships as well as preparing them for a successful adult life.
Each year the children will cover 3 common themes:
- Relationships
- Living in the wider world
- Health and well-being
We will be using the SCARF curriculum to explore PSHE this year. Take a look at the document below at what we will be learning about in PSHE in Year 5.
For further information please look at the PSHE curriculum page on our website.

Reading
Below are the Year 5 National Curriculum reading objectives. If you notice your child has used one of these whilst reading to you, you can use the code ( found down the side) and write it in their books. This is very helpful to us and it also supports you when hearing your child read.
Our class target is for every child to read for at least 80 minutes a week. Please record their minutes in their reading diaries.
As part of the reading curriculum we shall be using VIPERS to encourage comprehension through questions:
These stand for 'Vocabulary, Infer, Predict, Explain, Retrieve, Summarise'.

Spellings
Below are statutory spellings for Year 5/6. Each week we will ask you to learn a selection of these words. There are also some spelling strategies to help with learning the words.
PE in Year 5
In the Summer term, our PE days are Wednesday and Friday. Please ensure that your child comes to school in a PE kit that is suitable for all weathers. Please also make sure that long hair is tied back on these days and ear-rings are taken out before coming to school. Thank you.
Maths
Reminder - your child can use their Times Table Rockstar logins to practise key times table skills at home.
Another great website is Oxford Owl. It gives ideas for variety of maths activities you could try at home with your child.
